Requirements

  • Understanding of IP addresses, ports, TCP and UDP
  • A computer where you can install Wireshark

Description

When an application is slow or a connection keeps dropping, teams often argue: the developers blame the network, the network team blames the application, and the vendor blames everyone else. A packet capture shows what actually happened on the wire. This course teaches you to capture traffic safely, read it with confidence and turn what you see into a clear diagnosis.

What you will learn

  • Installing Wireshark and capturing on the right interface without drowning in data
  • Reading the packet list, details and bytes panes
  • Writing capture filters and display filters that find what matters
  • Recognising normal ARP, DHCP, DNS, TCP, TLS and HTTP behaviour
  • Diagnosing retransmissions, window problems, latency and resets
  • Using tcpdump and tshark on servers without a graphical interface
  • Working through real style cases: slow sites, failing DNS, API timeouts and Wi-Fi drops
  • Capturing legally and ethically, and writing up findings for others

Practice files

Every lesson comes with sample capture files recorded in a lab, so you can follow along even if you cannot capture on your own network. You will also run safe captures of your own traffic, such as browsing a site or resolving a name.

Who it is for

Network and system administrators, developers, support engineers and security learners who know networking basics, such as IP addresses, ports and the difference between TCP and UDP, and want to troubleshoot with evidence. The course uses a current Wireshark 4 release, which is free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Who this course is for

  • Network and system administrators
  • Developers and support engineers who debug connectivity
  • Security learners who want to read traffic confidently

I have worked as a network engineer in campus and data centre environments, designing addressing plans, configuring switches and routers and spending more hours than I can count reading packet captures.

I teach networking from first principles and always connect theory to something you can see: a ping, a traceroute, a Wireshark trace or a running config. You will build labs in free tools like Cisco Packet Tracer and GNS3, and practise on your own machine with the command line.

My courses help developers, IT staff and students preparing for entry level certifications understand what actually happens between two hosts, and give them a calm, methodical way to fix things when the network breaks.

Ethics lesson appreciated

Clear guidance on permission and privacy that I could share with my manager before capturing.

Ended an argument at work

We had blamed the network for weeks. One capture showed a four second time to first byte from the application. Problem solved the next day.

Great for developers

I debug APIs and now use tcpdump on servers and Wireshark locally. TLS key log decryption was very useful.

Display filters made easy

The filter lessons and the right click to filter tip changed how quickly I find things in captures.

Excellent case studies

The load balancer timeout case was almost exactly our production issue. Wanted one more Wi-Fi example.

Assumes networking basics

Good if you already know TCP and IP well. I had to revise some fundamentals first.
