Section 1: Getting started

What programming is and why Python

Video 7 min Lesson 1 of 26 Sample clip Preview

A program is a list of instructions a computer follows exactly. Computers are very fast and very literal. They do not guess what you meant, which is why programming is mostly about being precise and breaking problems into small steps.

Python is a programming language: a way of writing those instructions so that both people and computers can read them. Here is a complete Python program:

name = input("What is your name? ")
print("Hello, " + name + "!")

Even without knowing Python, you can probably guess what it does. It asks for your name and greets you. That readability is one of the main reasons Python is such a popular first language.

Where Python is used

  • Automation: renaming files, filling spreadsheets, sending reports
  • Data analysis: cleaning data and making charts with libraries like pandas
  • Web development: back ends built with Django, Flask or FastAPI
  • Machine learning and AI: most research and many production systems
  • Scripting inside other tools, from 3D software to network equipment

Learning the fundamentals in this course prepares you for any of these directions.

How this course works

We go in small steps. Each lesson introduces one or two ideas with examples, and most end with a short exercise. Do the exercises. Reading code feels easy, but writing it yourself is where learning happens.

You will make mistakes, and that is completely normal. Every programmer, including those with decades of experience, sees error messages every day. In this course you will learn to read them calmly, because they almost always tell you what went wrong and where.

What you need

A computer, about thirty minutes a day and some patience. No maths beyond basic arithmetic is needed. If you can follow a recipe, you can learn to program.

In the next lesson we install Python and a code editor, and run the program above on your own machine.
