Section 1: Getting started with Looker Studio
What Looker Studio is good at
Looker Studio is a browser based tool from Google for building reports and dashboards. You connect it to data, drag charts onto a canvas and share the result with a link, much like sharing a Google Doc. Reports update automatically when the underlying data changes.
Where it shines
- Free and quick to start: no installation, no licence cost for the standard version.
- Strong Google integrations: native connectors for Google Sheets, Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery and more.
- Easy sharing: viewers need only a browser and a link with the right permissions.
- Interactive reports: filters, date pickers and drill downs let viewers explore without editing.
- Hundreds of partner connectors: for tools such as advertising platforms, CRMs and databases, some free and some paid.
Where it is limited
- Heavy data modelling is awkward. If you need complex joins, many tables or advanced calculations, prepare data first in a spreadsheet, BigQuery or a database.
- Very large datasets can make reports slow, especially when reading directly from Google Sheets.
- Governance features such as certified data sources and detailed usage auditing are limited compared with enterprise BI tools.
For most small and medium teams, these limits matter less than the speed and price.
How a report works
Every Looker Studio report has three layers:
- Data source: a connection to your data, with a list of fields and their types.
- Report: pages containing charts and controls.
- Charts: each chart uses one data source (or a blend) and shows chosen dimensions and metrics.
Understanding this separation matters. If a number is wrong, the problem may be in the data itself, in the data source field settings or in the chart configuration. Knowing which layer to check saves time.
The samples we use
To follow along without sharing your own company data, we use:
- The Google Analytics 4 demo account for a real ecommerce site, available to anyone with a Google account.
- A sales pipeline Google Sheet provided with the course.
- A small finance sheet with monthly revenue and costs.
Copy the sheets into your own Google Drive before the next lesson.
A note on naming
You may still see "Data Studio" in older articles and videos. Google renamed the product to Looker Studio in 2022. Most features carried over, so older tutorials are often still useful, though some menus have moved.
